Costa Rica Tour Activities

Butterfly Gardens

Butterfly gardens can be found throughout most regions of Costa Rica, alone, as part of another attraction, and even as part of some hotel facilities. Most of our destinations offer this opportunity including Sarapiquí, Arenal, Monteverde, Rincon de la Vieja, around San Jose, and the Osa Peninsula.

Canopy & Zipline Tours

The adrenaline pumping Canopy or Zipline Tour was built first in Costa Rica and is now available in numerous locations of the country. It has become a ‘must do’ vacation activity. Although the number of platforms, adrenaline level, speed and distance, views and terrain can vary, safety is of utmost the concern in all canopy operations. While on raised platforms or zipping along on a cable you have proper equipment and attentive guides who ensure your safety and provide the most exciting ride possible. With names like Crazy Monkey Canopy, Jungle Monkey, Tarzan Swing, or the Superman Zipline, you are sure to enjoy whichever canopy tour you pick. Some of our favorites are in Monteverde and Drake Bay.

La Paz Waterfall Gardens

La Paz Waterfall Gardens offers something for everyone and a great place to start your Costa Rica vacation. This nature-themed park is home to many of the species of animals you may encounter in the wild rainforests and gives you an idea of what you will be looking for. Exhibits of Costa Rican birds, butterflies, frogs, snakes, monkeys, toucans, jungle cats,  and hummingbirds are the centerpiece of the park. A reconstruction of an authentic Costa Rican home gives cultural insight into the Costa Rican lifestyle of a hundred years ago. A trail with 5 impressive waterfalls allows you to get great photos from below, above and even behind.  Just 1.5 hours from San Jose.

Wildlife Hikes & Birding Walks

Birding Walks
With 830 species of birds in Costa Rica, this is THE activity to enjoy in as many destinations as possible. With a Pizotes Adventure Tour you will have top notch bird guides who put their many birding skills to work daily in their rainforest ‘backyard.’ Each destination is different from the last, thanks to the incredible diversity of ecosystems, mini climates and animal habitats. The bird walks generally start early with the sunrise and can be a long rainforest trek or a short easy stroll around your lodge.

If you are a serious birder, there are many ‘firsts’ you can view in Costa Rica; The Resplendent Quetzal, Three-wattled Bellbird, 9 Trogan species, colorful Tanagers, Honeycreepers, Warblers and Euphonias, the Scarlet and Great Green Macaws, Great Currasows and Guans, Jabiru and Wood Storks, Roseate Spoonbills, 5 species of Toucans, 6 species of Kingfishers, 6 Motmot species, and the bird with the best name ever – the Chacalaca!

Wildlife Hikes
Costa Rica has earned the deserved reputation of being a haven for nature lovers and it never disappoints. Wildlife hikes are the #1 vacation activity and available in every destination Pizotes Adventure Tours offers. With 12 different ‘Life Zones’ found in Costa Rica the diversity of animal and plant life is phenomenal and you can experience a good part of it by venturing out into ‘their’ homes. Your expert guides will do their best to introduce you to the local wildlife resident species and share interesting facts about them as well as ‘how’ and ‘why’ they are so important in their respective ecosystems. Encountering a team of leaf-cutter ants and learning about their highly-developed farming society will absolutely fascinate you. Watching spider monkeys effortlessly fly through the rainforest will make you stop in awe of their natural acrobatics. Also searching for and FINDING the Resplendent Quetzal in the thick cloud forest will be a reward unto its own. Each hike is different, each is a treasure hunt of sorts and each will broaden your understanding of the world around you.

Extreme Hikes
Ready for an adventure? Challenging ‘extreme’ hikes and backpacking treks are becoming more available in many parts of Costa Rica now. In Arenal you can take a ½ day challenging hike to the Cerro Chato volcano crater and feel you have accomplished a feat. On the Osa Peninsula you can take day hikes into Corcovado National Park or multi-day backpacking treks along a ridgeline that runs along the park. Guides are a MUST and will ensure you get where you are going, come back out of the forest safely, and see as much wildlife as possible along the way!
